chief forecasters commentary

Thunderstorms affected parts of Essex during the early hours of Monday. Lightning was frequent for a time in Thaxted and Finchingfield where short interruptions to power supplies were reported. Rainfall amounts of just over an inch are estimated by high-resolution radar in the NW corner of the county, most of which fell in under an hour.

Showers and thunderstorms will gradually die away this morning as cloud breaks and allows sunshine to break through. There is the chance of further thunderstorms developing this afternoon, chiefly in Southern and Eastern districts. All areas will become dry overnight into Tuesday.

A Met Office severe weather warning remains in force until 23:45 this evening and covers the county of Essex and unitary authorities of Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock.
