chief forecasters commentary

Figures released from the Met Office confirm that Essex has enjoyed one of the top 10 warmest July's on record. Rainfall however, varies greatly with Southern districts seeing close to 250% of average due to slow moving thunderstorms during the past couple of weeks. Sunshine amounts were slightly above normal.

Over the past few months, a combination of day-time and night-time temperatures consistently above the 30-year average has lead to sea-temperatures off the Essex coastline reaching near record levels. Sea surface temperatures near Clacton and Maldon for example are close to those found in California.

The Daily Express headline today promises the 'Hottest August in 300 YEARS as jet stream BOILS Britain' - as usual you can take this with a pinch of salt (just like their winter forecast last year which promised the coldest in over 100 years!) There is no sign whatsoever of any extreme heat on any of the computer models or ensembles this morning over North-West Europe during the next 10-14 day period.
